I am excited to say that I have now seen all of the classes for general music at South. I was anxious to return to my old students and see what I have missed in the past year and I was equally excited to meet so many new friends! The start of the year in general music tends to include a lot of rules, expectations and paperwork!
In kindergarten and first grade, we will be singing a lot of songs and playing games that teach basic musical concepts. I also give these students the opportunity to sing for their classmates. This is so important as the kids develop their own musicality at such a young age. It is very fun for me to see the children excited to sing.
In second grade we just learned about dynamics in music. These are words in Italian that tell musicians to play loud or soft. The students really love to play the Closet Key game. Ask your second grader to play it with you.
In third grade, we are reviewing the notes on the staff and playing the Boomwhackers. The students love to play these instruments and will be composing their own “Boomwhacker Song” at the end of this unit.
Fourth and fifth graders have a lot of opportunities. In fourth grade, all students must have a recorder by October 7th. Order forms for recorders are due by September 20th. This is a mandatory unit in 4th grade and all students must participate.
In fourth grade, the students also have the opportunity to learn a string instrument. Mr. Schaefer has done instrument demos in both classes and students need to turn in their slips by Friday, September 13. If you have any questions, contact Mr. Schaefer at [email protected].
In fifth grade, the students have the opportunity to play a band instrument (flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone or percussion). Forms were distributed and need to be turned in to the classroom teacher by Monday, September 16, 2013. If you have any questions, contact Miss Geremia at [email protected].
I hope the first week back to school has been a good one for everyone! Check my blog on this site for the weekly focused class!
